who we are

The Beginning

Founded by Tania Warnock and Dr. Monte Matli, the Beards & Bourbon Wirehaired Pointing Griffon Foundation stands as a poignant tribute to Tania's brother, Staff Sergeant Mike Ward. A distinguished soldier with two decades of unwavering service, Mike succumbed to colon cancer at age 50—a devastating consequence of his courageous deployments to Iraq during Operation Desert Shield. His valor and dedication earned him numerous accolades. A true veteran, he bravely served multiple tours in both Iraq and Afghanistan, culminating in his 2011 mission to Afghanistan with Echo Company 1/179 Infantry during Operation Enduring Freedom, a deployment that garnered him the prestigious Bronze Star. His exemplary career spanned three decades and three distinct conflicts, leaving an enduring legacy of selfless sacrifice.

As Mike's condition worsened, he began to imagine the prospect of a service dog – a steadfast, four-legged friend – became increasingly alluring. He envisioned the profound emotional solace and practical support such a devoted animal could offer as his physical capabilities waned. Sadly, Mike's dying wish, to have a loyal canine companion by his side, remained unfulfilled. His debilitating illness rendered him incapable of offering the devoted care a service dog requires, a heartbreaking contrast to his heartfelt desire to know the bond between a man and his service dog, the unshakeable, profound connection that exceeds the capacity of even the deepest human attachments. Their unwavering loyalty transcends description.

Consumed by sorrow over Mike's declining condition, Tania found solace in purposeful action. She resolved to realize his unfulfilled dreams, a commitment that propelled her onto a demanding but deeply fulfilling journey. Her focus sharpened: the meticulous breeding of Wirehaired Pointing Griffons for service work. Each subsequent litter of puppies—beginning with that first, hopeful arrival—became a powerful testament to Mike's memory, a concrete step toward honoring his life. The original breeding stock consistently produced offspring possessing exceptional temperaments, ideally suited for service roles. These dogs not only thrived in competitive arenas, excelling in both conformation and field trials, but also possessed remarkable traits: a courageous spirit, unflinching self-assurance, and insatiable curiosity, all underpinned by unwavering devotion and an eager willingness to please—the hallmarks of future companions providing invaluable service and therapeutic support.

MEET OUR VETERANS

Recipient of the Summer 2025 Service Dog Award

Sergeant Joshua Yarris is the deserving recipient of our Summer 2025 Service Dog Award. His journey began in 2012 with Buddy, a canine companion initially intended as a family pet and for protection. However, Buddy transcended this role, evolving into an indispensable confidant and steadfast ally. Their bond was profound; Buddy’s unwavering loyalty provided solace amidst life's storms, offering unwavering support during Joshua's darkest hours. The thirteen years they shared were a testament to their unbreakable connection; Buddy's presence was a balm, a constant source of comfort and security. His love was unconditional, a silent, unwavering presence that transcended words.

As time progressed, Buddy's intuitive sensitivity sharpened; he instinctively sensed Joshua's anxieties, seeking him out during periods of distress. This unique empathy offered a comfort unparalleled by human interaction. Sometimes, words fail; dogs, however, possess an innate understanding that bypasses the limitations of language. Their shared years were filled with joy, shaping Joshua's life for the better.

Joshua, an ardent outdoorsman and hunter, finds his sanctuary in the wilderness with his cherished family. He sought a versatile canine partner seamlessly integrated into their lives, and a Wirehaired Pointing Griffon proved to be the ideal solution. His combat-related disabilities necessitate his role as a stay-at-home father, and the prospect of training and adventuring with his new Griffon instills profound purpose and excitement. The isolating effects of PTSD are significantly mitigated by the companionship of a loyal dog. Buddy instilled in Joshua an unshakeable confidence, enabling him to flourish despite his challenges. We earnestly hope that Josh’s Beard’s & Bourbon Wirehaired Pointing Griffon puppy will nurture this burgeoning confidence, empowering him to continue to thrive as a devoted husband and father.
